The article analyzes the traditional and authorial features of metaphorical usage in Kazakh poetry based on the poems of T. Aibergenov. The relevance of the study is determined by the role of metaphor in enriching the semantic system of the language, enhancing imagery and expressiveness in literary texts, and its nature as a cognitive mechanism reflecting the poet’s worldview. The theoretical framework is based on the ideas of B. Khasanov, who was among the first scholars to systematically and comprehensively study the problem of metaphor in Kazakh linguistics. He defined metaphor as the use of a word in a figurative meaning based on the comparison of two objects or phenomena. The study also draws on the scientific views of I. Kenesbayev on national linguistic specificity, the linguistic definitions of A.B. Salkynbay and E. Abakan, as well as the works of B. Kassym, A. Bolganbaiuly and G. Kaliuly, and Sh. Kurmanbaiuly concerning the role of metaphor in word formation and terminology development. The research material consists of metaphorical units selected from the poetic texts of T. Aibergenov and analyzed using descriptive, semantic, and contextual methods. The results show that traditional linguistic metaphors in the poet’s works form stable images closely connected with national consciousness and establish an emotional connection with the reader, while authorial metaphors reveal the poet’s unique aesthetic world, original associative thinking, and cognitive potential of figurative expression. The article systematizes the relationship and differences between traditional metaphor and authorial innovation and clarifies the semantic and artistic functions of metaphor in T. Aibergenov’s poetry.
