The article is devoted to the history of the socio-economic development of Kazakhstan in the 2nd half of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. The author makes a historiographical review of domestic and foreign works published on this issue. The spread of capitalist relations in the country, the development of trade, the presence of rich natural resources and livestock products, as well as the colonial policy of Russia are analyzed as the main factors that led to the creation of manufacturing industry on Kazakh soil. As the main sectors of economic life, the creation and activities of the oil and fat, flour milling, tanning, soap production, tobacco products and mining, oil refining, salt industries in various regions of Kazakhstan are analyzed. In addition, the authors, on the basis of quantitative indicators and statistical data, conduct a comparative analysis of the production activity and development trends of various enterprises on Kazakh soil in the second half of the 19 th – early 20th centuries. The colonial nature of the economic policy of the Russian Empire and the exploitation of foreign company owners in relation to the Kazakhs are determined.
