The article analyzes the state of language theory in those aspects and directions that underlie this research. The methodological basis of the research is the doctrine of the universal connection and development of phenomena, about the active role of the subject in cognition. The initial theoretical foundations are associated with the creative refraction of human cognition of reality in linguistic structures, when the choice of the necessary means and method of transmitting the appropriate meaning is determined by the tasks of the author (speaker) and is carried out in accordance with one of the trends in language towards saving linguistic resources. The relevance of the research is determined by the need to further study the means, types and methods of verbal nomination in the English language, the increased interest in the problems of variation and is associated with the orientation characteristic of modern linguistics towards an in-depth description of the semantic and functional properties of linguistic units. The relevance of the problem is also determined by the fact that the creation of an appropriate empirical base and the development of theoretical foundations of linguistic pragmatics is one of the primary tasks of this field of linguistics, promising the resolution of many issues related to the functioning of language in a historically specific socio-cultural context.

The importance of the research is also seen in the direct connection of the topic of the work with the development of a methodology for system-functional analysis of multilevel units, which makes it possible to establish interdependence and general patterns in various linguistic phenomena, as well as to clarify the semantics and functional purpose of the language unit.

The phenomena we are considering are widely used in modern English. In addition, similar cases of verb nomination are common in other languages, and each language has its own specifics. Accordingly, the study of the units we have identified is of no small importance for comparative studies.
