The article analyzes the stages of formation and development of the field of word formation,
separated from grammar, as an independent field. General linguistics discusses the impact of many research works on
word formation on the consideration of word formation problems as a separate branch of linguistics. Such difficult
questions are revealed as the object of studying word formation that belongs to him, his place in the system of linguistic
phenomena, his connection with other layers of the language, his social significance. The problems of word formation
are reflected in the first grammars and textbooks of the Kazakh language. In this article, having analyzed the research
work of linguists, it was concluded that the history of studying the word-formation system in the Kazakh language
should be divided into three stages based on the diachronic principle.
